Ravichandran Ashwin Retires from IPL, Opens Door to Global Leagues
Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), bringing the curtain down on a 16-year-long stint in the tournament. The 38-year-old made the announcement on Wednesday, stating that while his IPL journey has ended, he is open to exploring opportunities in franchise cricket across the globe.
Ashwin, who began and ended his IPL career with Chennai Super Kings, also turned out for Rising Pune Supergiant, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, and Kings XI Punjab during his time in the league. With 187 wickets in 221 matches at an economy rate of 7.2, he bows out as the fifth-highest wicket-taker in IPL history.
The seasoned campaigner, who retired from international cricket in December 2024 as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, said on social media: “They say every ending will have a new start. My time as an IPL cricketer comes to a close today, but my time as an explorer of the game around various leagues begins today.”
