After a death threat complaint, BJP’s Nupur Sharma is given security

Officials said today that after a FIR was filed on a complaint that she was receiving death threats because of her remarks about Prophet Muhammad, Delhi Police provided security to suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and her family.

She had asked the police to provide security because she had been harassed and threatened. “Sharma and her family have been given police protection after she claimed she had been threatened and harassed because of her remarks,” an official said.

Ms Sharma was suspended by the BJP on Sunday, and its Delhi unit’s media head, Naveen Kumar Jindal, was expelled, as the row over their remarks about Prophet Muhammad erupted into protests from Muslim countries.

In the wake of Muslim protests and harsh retaliation from countries such as Kuwait, Qatar, and Iran, the BJP issued a statement declaring that it respects all religions and strongly condemns insults to religious figures.

Mr Jindal’s now-deleted tweets and Ms Sharma’s comments made during a TV debate nearly ten days ago sparked a Twitter trend calling for a boycott of Indian products in some countries. Ms Sharma unconditionally retracted her statement after the incident, claiming that her remarks were in response to “continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev (Lord Shiva).”

Ms Sharma filed a complaint with the police’s cyber cell unit on May 28 alleging death threats and targeted hatred against various people. An FIR was filed against unknown people under IPC sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication), and 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult a woman’s modesty) based on this complaint.

“Another complaint was received from Sharma during the investigation against certain individuals who were promoting enmity. The case was then amended to include Section 153A of the IPC. ” Notices have been sent to Twitter Inc., and we are waiting for a response. The case is being investigated, according to the senior police official.
