NHAI Ends KYV Requirement for Car FASTags From February 2026

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced that the Know Your Vehicle (KYV) process will no longer be mandatory for cars when issuing new FASTags from February 1, 2026. The decision is aimed at improving convenience for motorists and addressing complaints of delays and inconvenience faced during FASTag activation. Existing car FASTags will also be exempt from routine KYV checks.

NHAI clarified that KYV will now be carried out only in specific cases, such as complaints related to incorrect issuance, misuse or loose FASTags. In the absence of such issues, car users will not be required to undergo KYV verification. The move is expected to benefit a large number of vehicle owners who were previously asked to complete KYV despite having valid documentation.

To ensure system integrity, NHAI has strengthened pre-activation verification norms. FASTags will now be activated only after vehicle details are verified through the VAHAN database. If details are unavailable on VAHAN, banks must verify information using the vehicle’s registration certificate and will be fully responsible for the accuracy. These measures aim to simplify FASTag usage while making the system more transparent and user-friendly.
