Only one woman on the committee to study raising the age of marriage

Only one woman on the parliamentary committee appointed to study the marriage age bill, which raises the age of marriage for women to 21. The 31-member committee consisted of only one woman. Trinamool Congress MP Sushmita Dev was included. The committee is chaired by BJP leader Vinay Sahasrabuddha.

Following strong opposition, the bill was tabled in the last session of Parliament for consideration by the Committee on Education, Women and Child Welfare and Youth Affairs and Sports. Sushmita Dev and NCP MP Supriya Sule said the committee needed more women members.

Jaya Jaitley said at least half of the committee wanted women to be represented. A committee comprising Jaya Jaitley has asked the government to raise the age of marriage for women to 21. But the BJP says it can submit the report without consulting more women. The government introduced the bill in the last session of Parliament. But following strong opposition from opposition parties, the bill was left to the committee to study.
