Govt supports ‘Electoral Bond scheme’ in SC

Few days after the Election Commission of India informed the top court that the electoral bond scheme, introduced recently to make political funding less risky task, would adversely affect the transparency in political funding, the central government has argued in the top court that the scheme was important to protect political donors from political victimisation.

Lately, several political parties, primarily leftists, have strongly criticised the electoral bond scheme, introduced recently.

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has even included the matter in their latest election manifesto. The CPI (M) manifesto assures that if come to they would scrap the controversial electoral bond scheme.

The BJP’s opinion is that the scheme serves twin purposes of greater accountability in political funding as well as anonymity.

Actually, the scheme is not fully opaque. If necessary, the concerned can verify the date regarding donors with the help of banking channel.

Many election researchers have supported the scheme. They have said that it would decrease the risk factor around political funding.

It is observed that a major shift has occurred in the financial structure of the electoral system after the introduction of the scheme.

There is a wide assumption that the scheme, launched with the support of the present government, would benefit the ruling than the opposition.
