No Ban on ‘Meesha’: Top Court

o2p2ef

Extending its support to the right to freedom of expression and speech, the top court of the country has dismissed a petition seeking the ban of a Malayalam novel which allegedly contains an objectionable conversation about those women who go to the Hindu religious place of temple.

Notably, the Supreme Court has observed that the culture of banning of books would curtail the free flow of ideas and thoughts in the society.

It is Chief Justice Dipak Mishra who has led the bench that has considered the case. Apart from the CJI, Justice A M Khanwilkar and Justice D Y Chandrachud are the two other judges who have been in the bench which has delivered the historic verdict.

Earlier, several prominent writers rallied behind Hareesh S -the writer of this controversial book- after the writer had sought the help of the literary world to help him overcome the challenges and threats posed by the, so called, neo-Hindu nationalists, who argued their sentiments were badly hurt by some conversions made between two characters in the book.

Do we need to get the approval of any fundamental nationalists before we create a piece of art or literature, if we want it to be circulated among the people of our society?
