Opposition parties to back non-Congress member for deputy speaker post in RS speaker election

It seems that the opposition parties are less likely to support the congress party’s representative in the upcoming Rajya Sabha deputy speaker election.

The leaders of the opposition parties who have met at the national capital have discussed the possibility of fielding an non-Congress representative against the BJP’s candidate in the Rajya Sabha deputy speaker election.

Presently, Congress leader P J Kurien is the deputy speaker of the Rajya Sabha. His term is expected to end later this month. For the last ten years, the post of RS deputy speaker has been being held by the Congress party.

As per the present status, the Congress party, which has only few seats less than the ruling BJP in the Upper House, is the second largest party in the house. In a normal circumstance, the best strategy is to support the candidate fielded for the competition by the grand old party.

It is clear that the opposition parties are not happy to give the Congress the prime opposition status -the status the saffron party already declined to the grand old party of the country.

As per the latest updates, the opposition parties will support a member of BJD for the post of the deputy speaker.

If the opposition stands together, they will definitely win the election, as they together have a considerable number of seats more than the BJP.

Unfortunately, the possibility of such a grand opposition union is still less likely, with the TRS, YSR Congress and BJD (all comfortable with the BJP) showing no interest to team up with the opposition led by the TMC, TDP, JD(S) and CPM.

Will the opposition parties create a history by winning this crucial election against the BJP?
