South African activist Kumi Naidoo appointed as next Secretary General of Amnesty International

Renowned South African human rights activist Kumi Naidoo has been appointed as the next Secretary General of the Amnesty International, the world’s largest human rights organizations.

The crucial appointment has come at a time when the world is struggling due to the growing cases of human rights violation.

In the African region alone, lakhs and lakhs of people have fallen under the clutches of the serious human rights violations.

Unfortunately, in most of the cases, either the governments or the powerful external forces backed by the west have been the perpetrators of the violations, making it difficult for the external agencies to intervene in the issue at the right time.

As per the available details, the three prominent African nations Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe alone has reported tens of thousands of human right violation cases.

Mr. Naidoo was a former International Executive Director of Greenpeace. He was the founding chairman of the Global Call to Action against Poverty and was the Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer of CIVICUS.

It is believed that the new Secretary General would actively intervene in the issues, particularly the human rights issues, occurring in the African region, which often gets less importance in the global forums.
