5 kg LPG Cylinders Rolled Out in Ghaziabad to Boost Access for Low-Income Households
Ghaziabad has introduced 5 kg Free Trade LPG cylinders to make clean cooking fuel more accessible for daily wage labourers, migrant workers, and low-income families. Launched in the Kavi Nagar Industrial Area, the initiative aims to bridge affordability gaps by offering smaller, lower-cost cylinders compared to the standard 14.2 kg ones. Around 85 gas agencies have joined the rollout, each receiving an initial stock to begin distribution.
To avail a connection, individuals need to visit a local gas agency with an Aadhaar card and pay ₹1,500, which includes a refundable security deposit of ₹900. The smaller cylinders also provide flexibility, allowing refills every 15 days—an advantage for households with irregular incomes. Unlike regular LPG connections, these do not require address proof and are sold at market rates, making them easier to access, especially for migrant workers.
The initiative aligns with the government’s broader push to expand clean fuel access while managing supply and price stability amid global energy fluctuations. Officials noted that over 6.6 lakh 5 kg cylinders have already been sold since late March, with sufficient stock available nationwide. The move is also expected to reduce reliance on polluting fuels like firewood and kerosene, supporting both public health and environmental goals.
