Commentary: The Ignored Topic of Custodial Deaths

One more custodial death happened in the state, which is considered as the most literate state in the country, and in which a political party which is regarding as the apostle of human rights rules.

Certainly, this is not any more an isolated incident. It is not the first time that a person has been found dead in the custody in the state in the last three years.

The recurrence of custodial death incident indicates that there is something wrong somewhere in the system.

It is high time to make a deep rational introspection in the matter. The concerned political elements from the top as well as from the bottom should initiate that introspection – it is utter foolishness to assume that the concerned bureaucracy will sort it out by its own means, as the recurrence alone is enough to understand that it is either incapable or uninterested.

The best thing that can be done at this moment is to push the topic out of the political platform, and place it in the social platform, where apolitical discussion is possible unlike the other.

There is no doubt that it is the politicisation of the topic that prevents the system from reaching a right preventive mechanism. An apolitical discussion may serve the purpose of reaching a perfect solution in the matter.

Of course, the focus is the state. But, the larger picture of the country should not be excluded from any discussion around the topic.

Violence is crime. There should not be any segregation between the state-led violence and the other. Both should be treated the same way, and punished the same way. If the system does not provide for that, then just redo the system in the aforesaid way.

Stop Violence!
