We requested that Vijay Babu be suspended by AMMA: Maala Parvathi speaks out about what happened at the ICC

Following the film body’s inaction against rape accused actor-producer Vijay Babu, Maala Parvathi resigned from the AMMA’s (Association of Malayalam Movie Artists) ICC (Internal Complaints Committee) on Monday. AMMA’s reluctance to take disciplinary action against the actor-producer prompted her resignation. Instead, AMMA allowed Babu to resign on his own terms. On Tuesday, ICC chairperson Shweta Menon and Kukku Parameshwaran resigned from the committee, following Parvathi’s resignation.

Maala Parvathi discusses the reasons for her resignation and AMMA’s stance on sexual assault and gender discrimination in this interview with iemalayalam.com. She says: “That’s something I can’t say. The committee has only been in operation for about two months. We received training after forming the ICC. When we celebrated International Women’s Day at AMMA, we did so with the assurance that women’s voices would be heard. To make a difference, more women have been added to the executive committee. It’s important to note that ICC is not an AMMA committee. It’s a self-contained entity. That is why we have legal experts who are not affiliated with AMMA. Every organisation in India has an ICC that is constantly monitored. The ICC is a body that must approach things with extreme caution. After a Supreme Court order, AMMA formed the ICC, but I’m not sure if AMMA was ready for such a body.

I say this because only ICC members received training on the legal scope of the POSH Act, its limitations, and possibilities. AMMA members and executive members, in my opinion, should have received training.”
