“We Are Protecting You”: Supreme Court Relief For Congress’ Pawan Khera

Congress politician Pawan Khera was today granted interim bail by the Supreme Court in a case involving his alleged insult to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hours after his dramatic removal from a flight and detention at the Delhi airport.

“There has to be some level of discourse, we are protecting you,” Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said while granting relief to Pawan Khera till Tuesday, when the Supreme Court will hear the case next. The court agreed to the Congress’s request to club cases registered against Mr Khera in Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

After Mr. Khera’s request to deplane from a trip to Raipur, Chhattisgarh, where the party intends to debate internal elections during a three-day meeting, around 50 Congress leaders staged a rare protest on the tarmac of the Delhi airport this morning. When he was requested to get off the plane, Mr. Khera was ready to take off for Raipur in order to attend a meeting of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

A police team came all the way from Assam to arrest Mr Khera. At a recent press conference, the Congress spokesperson had flubbed PM Modi’s name while demanding a parliamentary inquiry into the Adani-Hindenburg row. “If Narasimha Rao could form a JPC (Joint Parliamentary Committee), if Atal Bihari Vajpayee could form a JPC, then what problem does Narendra Gautam Das…sorry Damodardas…Modi have?” he said.

The Congress claimed before the Supreme Court that Mr. Khera had apologised and that it had been merely a “slip of the tongue.”

The Chief Justice questioned why there was “religious conflict” in this situation. A video of the comments was repeatedly shown to the judges. The BJP is adamant that Mr. Khera’s error was intentional. “Our lordships may observe the smiles and chuckles from all sides. This is the nation’s prime minister “Aishwarya Bhati, Additional Solicitor General, said.

Assam has been the preferred location for FIRs connected to criticism of the BJP. After Mr. Khera’s remarks, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma sent out a forceful tweet. The “successful Bharat Jodo Yatra of Rahul Gandhi,” according to the Congress, is the reason why the BJP is acting out of fear and attempting to prevent the party’s plenary meeting. Due to charges of money-laundering, the Enforcement Directorate searched Congress MLAs in Chhattisgarh last week.
