US Ambassador Gor Arrives in India Amid Trade Tensions
US Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor arrived in India on January 9, marking the start of his tenure amid strained bilateral ties. The 38-year-old, formerly White House personnel director and a close aide to President Donald Trump, highlighted the “incredible opportunities ahead” for India-US relations, signaling an optimistic approach despite recent trade tensions.
Gor faces the challenge of rebuilding relations following the US’s decision to sharply raise tariffs on Indian goods, including a 50% duty on exports and an additional 25% levy linked to India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. His priorities include advancing trade ties, addressing India’s protectionist policies, and persuading New Delhi to scale back Russian oil imports.
The arrival comes as the US considers further steep tariff hikes of up to 500% under the proposed Russia Sanctions Bill, co-sponsored by Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, aimed at countries continuing to buy Russian oil. Gor’s tenure will be closely watched by policymakers in both countries during this critical period.
