They Say “Beti Bachao” But “Save Rapists” Instead: Rahul Gandhi On Bilkis Bano Case
Rahul Gandhi, the head of the Congress, today sought justice for Bilkis Bano, a victim of rape during the Gujarat riots, and claimed that people who support “empty slogans” like “Beti Bachao” are actually “protecting rapists.”
After serving 15 years in prison, the 11 inmates were freed on August 15 as part of the Gujarat government’s remission policy. Rahul Gandhi stated in a Hindi tweet that “those offering empty slogans like ‘Beti Bachao’ are shielding rapists.”
“The issue at hand now is the nation’s treatment of and rights for women. Give Bilkis Bano justice “the former head of Congress remarked.
On March 3, 2002, during the Gujarat riots that broke out in response to the burning of the Godhra train, Bilkis Bano was gang-raped in the Gujarat village of Randhikpur, and seven members of her family—including her three-year-old daughter—were also killed. At the time, she was five months pregnant and age 21. On August 15, after the Gujarat government approved their release under its policy of remission, the prisoners left the Godhra sub-jail.
On January 21, 2008, a special CBI court in Mumbai sentenced the 11 to life in prison on gangrape and murder-related offences. Later, both the Bombay High Court and the Supreme Court upheld their conviction.
