Tesla Trails VinFast, BYD as India EV Market Surges in FY26

India’s electric passenger vehicle (EV) market recorded strong growth in FY26, reaching 199,923 units and accounting for 4.2% of the overall passenger vehicle segment—an 83.6% year-on-year increase. However, Tesla Inc. lagged behind newer entrants despite entering the market in July 2025. The company sold just 342 units during the fiscal year, capturing a modest 0.17% share. In contrast, Vietnam’s VinFast delivered 2,390 units within a year of launch, aided by competitive pricing in the Rs 25–35 lakh range and plans to establish a large manufacturing facility in Tamil Nadu by 2027.

China’s BYD also outperformed Tesla, selling 5,361 units in FY26, up 54% year-on-year, despite facing steep import duties and geopolitical hurdles. With models like the Atto 3 and eMax 7 priced competitively and a rapidly expanding service network, BYD has strengthened its foothold in India. Meanwhile, Tesla’s higher pricing—between Rs 59.89 lakh and Rs 67.89 lakh for the Model Y—and limited retail presence of just two showrooms have restricted its growth compared to BYD’s and VinFast’s wider dealership networks across multiple cities.

Industry experts suggest Tesla’s cautious approach and lack of localisation have hindered its early performance. Analysts note that Tesla’s global success in markets such as the United States, Europe, and China accelerated only after establishing local manufacturing facilities. In India, however, high import duties of 100–110%, limited model availability, and underdeveloped charging infrastructure continue to pose challenges. Without a clear commitment to local production, Tesla may struggle to replicate its international growth trajectory in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets.
