Tata Motors Turns to Chery Technology to Accelerate Premium EV Plans
Tata Motors has partnered with Chinese automaker Chery to develop its premium Avinya electric vehicle range, marking a strategic move to revive a delayed EV program and strengthen its position in India’s growing electric vehicle market. The company will utilize Chery’s Freelander platform, developed through a joint venture with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), with production set to take place at Tata’s newly established facility in Tamil Nadu.
The first Avinya model based on the Chery platform is expected to launch in 2027, followed by a second model in 2029. The collaboration comes after Tata’s original plan to build Avinya vehicles on JLR’s Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) was abandoned when JLR shelved its India-focused EV plans. By leveraging Chery’s proven technology, Tata aims to reduce development time, gain access to advanced EV features, and maintain its leadership in the domestic electric vehicle segment.
The agreement also highlights the growing reliance of Indian automakers on Chinese EV technology despite regulatory and political restrictions on Chinese investments. As competition intensifies from rivals such as Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW MG Motor, Tata views the Chery partnership as a crucial step in expanding its EV portfolio while continuing long-term efforts to develop its own dedicated electric vehicle platform.
