Tamil Nadu Drops ₹274-Billion Chennai Second Airport Plan
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay has announced that the state will drop plans to build a second airport at Parandur near Chennai, a project estimated to cost ₹274 billion ($2.86 billion). The proposal had received civil aviation clearance but faced strong opposition from farmers over its impact on agricultural land.
The government is now considering alternative sites that would have significantly less impact on farmland. Industry leaders have urged the state to quickly finalise a location, highlighting the need for greater aviation capacity to support Chennai’s expanding manufacturing, logistics and services sectors.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu plans to expand Chennai’s existing airport from its current capacity of around 30 million passengers a year to 55 million. The state, which accounts for about 15% of India’s factories and manufacturing employment, has also recently signed nearly 100 investment agreements worth ₹674.52 billion.
