Sun Pharma Wins Approval to Launch Generic Wegovy in India

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, India’s largest drugmaker by revenue, has received regulatory approval to manufacture and sell a generic version of Novo Nordisk’s blockbuster weight-loss drug Wegovy in India, the company said on Friday.

The generic drug, semaglutide, will be launched under the brand name Noveltreat after the expiry of Novo Nordisk’s patent in March 2026. Semaglutide is the active ingredient used in both Wegovy and Ozempic, widely known for their appetite-suppressing and weight-loss effects.

Indian drugmakers are racing to tap into the rapidly growing weight-loss drug market. Sun Pharma becomes the second Indian company to receive approval for generic semaglutide, following Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, which recently secured clearance to produce a generic version of Ozempic.
