States Roll Out Austerity Measures After PM Modi’s Fuel-Saving Push
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for austerity and fuel conservation has prompted several state governments to introduce measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption and promoting sustainable practices. During an event in Telangana, Modi urged citizens to avoid unnecessary foreign travel and gold purchases for a year while encouraging the use of local products and the revival of work-from-home, online meetings, and virtual conferences introduced during the COVID period.
Following the appeal, states including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh announced steps such as reducing convoy vehicles, promoting public transport, carpooling, cycling, and increasing virtual meetings. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a 50% cut in convoy vehicles and encouraged weekly “No Vehicle Day” observances, while Maharashtra ministers shifted many departmental meetings online.
Several leaders also adopted personal austerity measures. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta encouraged officials to prioritise Metro and bus travel, while Gujarat officials reduced escort vehicles and promoted “Chemical Engine Free Day” in universities. In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav reduced his convoy size and instructed ministers to minimise official travel, reflecting a nationwide push towards energy conservation amid global fuel uncertainty.
