Sonam Wangchuk Urged to End Hunger Strike Over Exam Leaks

Prominent Indian education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has entered the 17th day of his hunger strike in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the exam paper leaks that affected millions of students earlier this year. Wangchuk, who is fasting in solidarity with a youth protest led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has reportedly become too weak to speak, with supporters saying his health continues to deteriorate after losing significant weight.

Supporters at the protest site said Wangchuk remains determined to continue the fast despite repeated appeals to end it. A fellow protester was hospitalized after fainting during the demonstration, raising concerns about the health of those participating. Organisers also said preparations are continuing for a planned march to Parliament on July 20, while government officials have not yet publicly responded to the latest demands.

Several opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav, have appealed to Wangchuk to call off his hunger strike, describing his life as invaluable. The protest has also drawn attention to growing frustration among India’s youth over unemployment and recurring examination paper leaks. The cancellation and rescheduling of a major medical entrance examination taken by more than 2 million candidates earlier this year further intensified public concern over the country’s examination system.
