Russia, Ukraine prisoners swap underway

The swapping of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine is underway. The swapping is regarded as the first step towards the reduction of tension between Moscow and Kiev.

The relation between the two countries worsened due to the annexation of the Crimean peninsula by Russia. The annexation paved way for the commencement of the battle between the Russian supported Ukrainian rebels and the Ukrainian forces in the region.

The first bell for peace has ringed the day a regime change has happened in Ukraine. The newly elected Ukrainian PM, Volodymyr Zelensky, whose prime campaign promise was the reduction of the tension between his country and its neighbour superpower, has not hesitated to work on his promise.

The discussions regarding the swapping have been conducted secretly. No detail about the deal has been publicised yet.

At this moment, it remains unclear who all have been released by Russia and who all have been send back by Ukraine as part of the deal.

Since the commencement of the war between the Russian-supported rebels and the Ukrainian security forces, as many as 13, 000 people have been killed in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where the battle is still going on.

The swap deal is expected to bring the situation in the affected region back to normal.
