Rupee Will Find Its Own Level’: Nirmala Sitharaman on INR Decline
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has addressed concerns over the Indian rupee hitting a record low against the U.S. dollar, stating that the currency will naturally “find its own level.” Speaking at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS) 2025, she emphasized that the rupee’s valuation should be viewed through economic fundamentals rather than political interpretations.
She responded to questions linking currency movements with nationalism and political debate, clarifying that earlier critiques of rupee weakness were tied to a different economic climate. She stressed that inflation, economic strength, and other macroeconomic indicators must shape how the rupee is evaluated today.
Supporting her remarks, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra reiterated that the central bank does not target a specific price band for the rupee. The INR recently touched an all-time low of 90.43 per dollar due to foreign investor selling and rising crude prices but rebounded to 89.89 a day later.
