Rishi Sunak, the UK’s Indian-origin minister, was questioned about his wife’s Infosys connection to Russia
Rishi Sunak, the Chancellor of the Exchequer of the United Kingdom (similar to India’s Finance Minister), was grilled on Thursday about Infosys, the major Indian software firm in which his wife, Akshata Murty, has a stake.
A Sky News reporter asked Rishi Sunak, the son-in-law of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, if his advice to businesses was not being followed in his own home, given the harsh sanctions imposed on Russia as a result of its invasion of Ukraine.
“It’s been reported that you have Russian ties, and that your wife owns a stake in the Indian consulting firm Infosys,” the reporter inquired of Sunak. “They operate in Moscow, where they have an office and a delivery office.” They have a connection to Moscow’s Alpha Bank.” “Are you giving others advice that you don’t follow in your own home?” the reporter inquired. “We’ve put in place significant sanctions, and all of the companies we’re responsible for are following them as they should,” the UK minister said, adding that the sanctions “send a very strong message to Putin’s aggression.”
Infosys said in a statement that it “supports and advocates for peace” between Russia and Ukraine. According to the report, Infosys has a small team of employees in Russia that provides local services to some global clients. They also stated that they have no active business relationships with Russian companies in the area.
