Reliance Wins Court Reprieve for Campa Energy Drink Label
The Delhi High Court has allowed Reliance Industries to continue marketing its Campa brand beverages as “energy drinks,” providing temporary relief to Reliance Consumer Products. The case challenges a June 30 order by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), which directed manufacturers of high-caffeine beverages to stop using the “energy drink” description.
Reliance told the court that the regulatory action had significantly disrupted its business, with state authorities seizing stock and e-commerce platforms being asked to remove the affected products. The company said it currently holds 168 million cans and 120 million plastic bottles with the disputed labelling, along with packaging for hundreds of millions of additional units. The court also questioned why FSSAI had not issued Reliance a notice before passing the order.
The development comes as other major beverage companies challenge the same restriction. PepsiCo and Monster Beverage have filed similar pleas, while Red Bull recently secured a court reprieve allowing it to continue using the “energy drink” label. The Delhi High Court will hear Reliance’s case again on November 5, as FSSAI’s wider food-safety crackdown continues across India.
