Police Detain Rahul Gandhi During Opposition Protest Over Election Commission
Indian police briefly detained Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and several opposition lawmakers on Tuesday during a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The lawmakers had marched toward the Election Commission of India (ECI) headquarters in New Delhi, alleging that voter lists had been revised to favour Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The protesters later staged a sit-in near the ECI office, with Gandhi calling for election commissioners to meet the lawmakers and address their concerns. Police eventually broke up the demonstration and detained several leaders, including Gandhi and his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Congress said they were later released.
Opposition parties have accused the election commission of compromising its neutrality, while the ECI and BJP have rejected the allegations. The protests come amid a series of demonstrations by opposition parties and student groups, adding to political pressure on the Modi government over concerns surrounding voter lists and election procedures.
