Onion Wholesale Prices Fall 9% in 9 Days; Retail Rates May Ease
Wholesale onion prices have fallen by 9 per cent across mandis over the past nine days, raising hopes that retail prices may soon ease. The All-India average retail price stood at ₹53.92 per kg on Tuesday, around 48 per cent higher than a month ago and 94 per cent above the level recorded a year earlier.
Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare said there is no shortage of onions and that the decline in wholesale prices is expected to have a positive impact on retail rates. The Centre has been selling onions at ₹35 per kg through NCCF, NAFED and Kendriya Bhandar outlets, as well as mobile vans, with the intervention reaching around 48 cities.
The government has also been releasing onion buffer stocks through road transport and railway rakes, including the Kanda Express, to improve availability and control seasonal price pressures. Onion inflation rose to 48.27 per cent in August from 22.54 per cent in July, while onion production in 2025-26 remained broadly stable at 307.37 lakh tonnes.
