Name Change Will Put ₹ 1,000 Crore Burden On Government: Aurangabad MP

Imtiaz Jaleel, a member of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), claimed on Monday that the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra’s Sambhaji Nagar name change plan was simply designed to update the paperwork of the government department and would cost  ₹ 1,000 crore.

“The responsibility of renaming Aurangabad will cost the government almost 1,000 crores. This is solely to update the government department’s papers. The weight of several thousand crores is placed on the shoulders of ordinary people, “During a press conference, Mr. Jaleel, an Aurangabad-based Lok Sabha member, said.

The state cabinet decided to rename Aurangabad as Sambhaji Nagar and another district, Osmanabad, as Dharashiv on June 29. This was the day before the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government was overthrown due to Eknath Shinde’s uprising, which led to Shinde’s subsequent appointment as the new chief minister of Maharashtra.

However, Samajwadi Party Maharashtra president and MLA Abu Asim Azmi had stated that “Be it BJP or MVA – that is limping on crutches – they want to sideline Muslims” in response to the government of former CM Uddhav Thackeray’s decision to change the name.

On the day of the major decision, Mr. Azmi reminded Sonia Gandhi and Sharad Pawar of his party’s backing and said that the ruling party had marginalised minorities. The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government was overthrown by Eknath Shinde’s 10-day uprising against the Shiv Sena. Shinde’s appointment as chief minister and Devendra Fadnavis’ appointment as deputy chief minister brought an end to the political situation in Maharashtra.
