The country is heavily dependent on the United States. The North American Free Trade Agreement, in which the country shares a platform with the US and Canada, is the backbone of the Mexican economy. The country also benefits from its membership in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

It has undergone several ups and downs such as the destruction of Mesoamercian civilisation, the rise of Mexico as a Spanish colony, the infiltration of Roman Catholic Church, the Mexican War of Independence, the rise of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the War of the Reform, the invasion of France, the Mexican Revolution, the emergence of Institutional Revolutionary Party and the true democratisation of Mexico.
