Meesho Receives ₹1,500 Crore Income Tax Demand, Plans to Contest Order
E-commerce platform Meesho has received an income tax demand notice of about ₹1,500 crore, including interest, for the assessment year 2023–24, according to a recent company filing. The notice, issued by the Income Tax Department’s Assessment Unit on March 6, states a total tax demand of ₹14,99,73,82,840 after certain additions and adjustments were made to the company’s reported income.
In its filing, Meesho said it does not agree with the observations and adjustments made in the assessment order and is currently evaluating the decision. The company stated that it believes it has sufficient legal and factual grounds to challenge the demand and is taking the necessary steps to contest it. Meesho also noted that a similar demand order for the assessment year 2022–23 is already under legal review, with the High Court of Karnataka granting an interim stay on that notice in April 2025.
The company added that the latest assessment order and demand notice are not expected to have a significant adverse impact on its financial position or operations. Meanwhile, Meesho reported a widening of its loss to ₹490.6 crore in the quarter ended December 2025, compared with ₹37.43 crore in the same period a year earlier. The increase was largely attributed to higher festive-season spending, with total expenses rising about 44 percent to nearly ₹4,071 crore, while revenue from operations grew 31 percent year-on-year to ₹3,517.5 crore.
