Lok Sabha Approves ₹2.01 Lakh Crore Extra Spending for FY26
The Lok Sabha has approved supplementary demands for grants amounting to ₹2.01 lakh crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year, following a voice vote amid opposition protests. The approval is aimed at strengthening the government’s financial commitments, including addressing concerns over LPG availability amid the West Asia crisis, while ensuring fiscal discipline remains intact.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman clarified that the additional spending would not breach the government’s fiscal deficit target of 4.4% of GDP. The original request sought ₹2.81 lakh crore, but estimated additional receipts of ₹80,000 crore reduced the net extra expenditure to ₹2.01 lakh crore, reflecting careful resource allocation within the existing budget.
The government’s Revised Estimates for FY26 now place total expenditure at ₹49.65 lakh crore, down from the initial ₹50.65 lakh crore projection. By January, ₹36.90 lakh crore had already been spent, highlighting the broader fiscal landscape in which these supplementary outlays will be implemented without compromising macroeconomic stability.
