Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw Urges Techies to Use Robotics for Cleaner Cities

Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, executive chairperson of Biocon Enterprises, has called on Indian technology professionals to use their skills to address civic problems, especially in Bengaluru. Highlighting the city’s worsening waste and infrastructure crisis, she questioned the lack of technological solutions despite the country’s strong tech talent. She urged developers and innovators to focus on turning “waste to wealth” and building cleaner, greener cities through innovation.

Posting on X, she pointed to examples from China, where robots are used to collect garbage, clean sewers, and monitor traffic violations. She asked why similar technology-driven civic solutions cannot be implemented in India, emphasizing that technical expertise should benefit public systems and urban life, not just private platforms. Her message quickly went viral and sparked widespread discussion online.

Many users supported her call, suggesting ideas such as AI-powered traffic monitoring, smart waste bins, and automated waste management systems. Others, however, pointed out that civic issues require cooperation from governments, companies, and citizens, not just technology. Some noted that structural challenges, policy hurdles, and public behavior also play a major role, stressing that technology alone cannot solve all urban governance problems.
