Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai Sworn in as 52nd Chief Justice of India

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai took oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Wednesday. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office, succeeding Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who retired a day earlier upon reaching the age of 65. The ceremony was attended by top dignitaries, including Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, and members of the Union Cabinet.

Justice Gavai, who will serve as CJI until November, began his legal career in 1985 and was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003, becoming permanent in 2005. Elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019, he has delivered nearly 300 judgments and participated in landmark cases, including the upholding of the 2016 demonetisation and the recent striking down of the electoral bonds scheme. He is only the second Dalit to hold the CJI post, after Justice KG Balakrishnan, and hails from a family deeply rooted in public service—his father, RS Gavai, was a social activist and former Governor.

The legal community widely welcomed his appointment. Senior advocate and MP Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi lauded him as a pragmatic and result-oriented judge, while Solicitor General Tushar Mehta praised his humility, legal brilliance, and impartiality. Both emphasized his grounded nature and commitment to justice, highlighting his deep understanding of the law and contribution to upholding constitutional values.
