JSW Group and Posco Sign MoU to Establish 5 MTPA Integrated Steel Plant in India
The JSW Group has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korea’s Posco Group to set up an integrated steel plant in India, targeting an initial production capacity of five million tonnes per annum (MTPA). The collaboration aims to bolster India’s steel and renewable energy industries, aligning with the country’s focus on sustainable growth. The MoU was signed at JSW’s headquarters in Mumbai, with JSW Chairman Sajjan Jindal and Posco Chairman Chang In-Hwa in attendance.
Highlighting the need to meet India’s rising steel demand, which is expected to surpass the country’s GDP growth, the partnership will leverage JSW’s manufacturing expertise and Posco’s advanced technology to create an impact on the industry. “This MoU with Posco is a significant step in our journey to contribute to the Indian steel industry and sustainable growth,” Jindal stated. Posco’s Chang In-hwa also expressed optimism, emphasizing the collaboration’s potential to drive eco-friendly development for both India and South Korea.
Expanding beyond steel, the JSW-Posco collaboration will also explore joint ventures in renewable energy and electric vehicle (EV) battery materials, addressing the steel plant’s energy needs and promoting growth in India’s EV sector. JSW has also announced plans for a green steel plant in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur, expected to generate 30,000 jobs, alongside a Rs 40,000 crore investment in an integrated EV and battery manufacturing complex in Cuttack and Paradip, promising over 11,000 job opportunities.
