Jaishankar, Wang Yi Hold Talks to Boost India-China Relations

Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi met in New Delhi on Monday to discuss key issues, including border peace, trade, connectivity, and people-to-people exchanges. Jaishankar emphasized that the talks would contribute to building a “stable, cooperative and forward-looking relationship” between the two Asian giants, noting that progress on border issues was essential to restoring positive momentum in bilateral ties.

Wang Yi, in turn, highlighted that exchanges and dialogue at multiple levels were gradually being restored, with relations “returning to cooperation.” He stressed the need for India and China to establish a correct strategic understanding, regarding each other as partners and opportunities rather than rivals or threats. Both leaders agreed that resolving border tensions, particularly troop withdrawal along the disputed Himalayan frontier, remained a crucial step in strengthening ties.

The visit comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming trip to China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, marking his first visit in seven years. Relations between India and China, strained since the deadly 2020 border clash, began to improve in October after a key agreement to ease military tensions was reached during talks between Xi Jinping and Modi in Russia. Wang is also scheduled to hold the 24th round of border talks with National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and meet Modi during his two-day visit.
