IndiGo Signals Fare Hikes as Rising Fuel Costs Pressure Airlines
Indian airline IndiGo has indicated that higher airfares are inevitable as rising aviation fuel prices increase operating costs. The airline said it would adjust flight capacity and manage expenses carefully in response to higher fuel costs and changing market conditions. It expects capacity growth to remain in the low single digits during the December quarter.
Rising oil prices, partly linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict, have put additional pressure on airlines. IndiGo reported a 19.2% increase in expenses to ₹263.57 billion during the September quarter, with aircraft fuel accounting for 37.8% of total expenses. The airline plans to assess flight operations individually, with greater capacity restrictions expected on international routes while domestic travel demand remains strong.
IndiGo reported a quarterly loss of ₹20.55 billion for the period ended September 30, compared with ₹26.14 billion in the same quarter last year. Despite the loss, passenger revenue per available seat kilometre is expected to grow by more than 25% year-on-year in the December quarter, supported by festive travel demand. The airline’s pricing strategy and capacity adjustments are expected to play an important role in managing rising operational costs.
