Indian Firms Launch Low-Cost Ozempic, Wegovy Generics
Indian pharmaceutical companies have rapidly introduced cheaper versions of Novo Nordisk’s diabetes drug Ozempic and weight-loss drug Wegovy following the expiration of semaglutide’s patent in India. Prices for these generics are about 70% lower than the original, with dozens of brands expected to hit the market as early as this year. Analysts predict over 40 Indian drugmakers will launch more than 50 variants, targeting both domestic and international markets.
Major Indian players such as SUN PHARMACEUTICAL, DR REDDY’S LABORATORIES, ZYDUS LIFESCIENCES, TORRENT PHARMACEUTICALS, GLENMARK, ALKEM, and ERIS LIFESCIENCES have already rolled out semaglutide in multiple dose forms, including injectable vials, disposable pens, reusable pens, and oral formulations. Weekly or monthly treatments are priced between $7.99 and $44.73, dramatically reducing the cost of managing diabetes and obesity.
The move positions Indian drugmakers to capture a share of the global obesity market, projected to reach $100 billion by the decade’s end. Companies are exploring exports to Canada, Brazil, Latin America, and Turkey, signaling a potential reshaping of international semaglutide availability and affordability.
