Indian Court Jails Journalist Over Adani Posts

An Indian court has sentenced journalist Ravi Nair to one year in prison for social media posts about the Adani Group, ruling that they were unverified, defamatory, and cast the company in a disreputable light. The case was filed in 2021 by Adani Enterprises, led by billionaire Gautam Adani, in a Gujarat district court over claims of political patronage, financial irregularities, and unethical conduct.

The court noted that Nair did not provide documentary evidence or verified data to substantiate his allegations. Nair’s lawyer argued the posts relied on publicly available information and constituted fair comment, while the journalist said he plans to appeal the conviction but declined further comment.

Criminal defamation remains part of India’s legal system, carrying up to two years in jail. Press freedom groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, expressed deep concern over the verdict and are monitoring the situation closely.
