India to Launch Unified Financial KYC
India will introduce a common customer identification system, Central Know-Your-Customer 2.0 (CKYC), for banks and insurance companies from August, with mutual funds and brokerages expected to join later this year. The new system will allow customers to access multiple financial services without repeatedly submitting identity documents, requiring only their consent to retrieve verified records.
The upgraded CKYC platform will improve data accuracy by assigning confidence scores to customer records and indicating whether the information has been verified by a financial institution. Regulators believe the system will simplify account opening, strengthen fraud detection, and make financial services more accessible across sectors.
The initiative is part of India’s broader effort to deepen financial participation beyond banking. While nearly 89% of adults already have bank accounts, participation in insurance, mutual funds, and pension products remains relatively low. Industry leaders expect the new unified KYC framework to make investing and purchasing financial products faster and more convenient.
