India Slams Trump-Linked ‘Hellhole’ Remark as “Uninformed” and Inappropriate
India has strongly criticized comments shared by Donald Trump that referred to the country as a “hellhole,” calling them “uninformed” and inconsistent with the longstanding ties between India and the United States. The remarks originated from conservative commentator Michael Savage during a radio show and were reposted by Trump on his Truth Social platform without additional commentary.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded sharply, with spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stating that the remarks were “inappropriate and in poor taste,” emphasizing that they do not reflect the reality of India-U.S. relations, which are built on mutual respect and shared interests. The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi sought to downplay the controversy, reiterating Trump’s earlier statement describing India as a “great country” and highlighting his positive rapport with Narendra Modi.
The controversy also drew domestic political reactions in India, with the opposition Congress party calling the remarks “extremely insulting” and urging the government to lodge a formal protest. The issue comes amid ongoing discussions between the two nations to strengthen trade ties, even as past tensions over tariffs and immigration policies—including Trump’s push to restrict birthright citizenship—continue to shape the diplomatic landscape.
