India Reports First Cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka

India has detected its first two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) announced. The infections were identified in a two-month-old girl and an eight-month-old boy, both with a history of bronchopneumonia and no international travel. While the girl has been discharged, the boy is recovering at Bengaluru Baptist Hospital and is expected to be released soon. The detections were made as part of routine surveillance under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

HMPV, a viral respiratory infection causing symptoms similar to the common cold, primarily affects children under 12 months and spreads through droplets or direct contact. The health ministry emphasized that HMPV is already in global circulation, and no unusual surge in respiratory illnesses has been observed in India. States like Karnataka, Kerala, and Delhi have heightened surveillance, with advisories recommending isolation, proper documentation of severe cases, and availability of essential treatments.

The Centre reassured citizens that there is no cause for panic, as HMPV has been present in India for years. The ministry stated that preparedness drills and enhanced testing capabilities are in place to handle any potential surge. The World Health Organization (WHO) is monitoring the situation in China and providing timely updates, while India’s health agencies remain vigilant to safeguard public health.
