India Praised for Handling US Trade Talks
Former US Commerce official Raymond Vickery has lauded India for navigating the Trump-style trade negotiation approach better than most major economies. He highlighted that India maintained a structured, detail-oriented process, in contrast to the Trump administration’s tendency to announce frameworks before finalizing terms. This approach, Vickery said, positions India among a select group of countries managing Washington’s trade demands “logically and deliberately.”
Vickery also emphasized the importance of US-India coordination on Russian oil imports, noting it as central to the broader geopolitical response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The White House recently revoked an additional 25% tariff on India following its commitment to halt Russian oil imports, signaling a step toward strengthened bilateral cooperation.
While welcoming progress on the interim trade framework, Vickery cautioned that long-term success will depend on translating headline agreements into operationally sound, durable trade arrangements. The US and India continue discussions on a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), launched in February by President Trump and Prime Minister Modi, which aims to expand market access and bolster resilient supply chains.
