India Left Searching for Answers After Shock T20 Series Defeat to Ireland
India’s cricket team has been left in a state of disbelief after suffering a stunning 2-0 T20I series whitewash against Ireland in Belfast. Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate admitted the defeat came as a major shock, saying the newly crowned T20 world champions were outplayed by an Irish side that executed the basics better. The series also marked an unsuccessful captaincy debut for Shreyas Iyer in the shortest format.
According to the Indian coaching staff, the team’s biggest weakness was its inability to adapt to the playing conditions in Belfast. After spending months on the batting-friendly pitches of the Indian Premier League, India’s batters struggled on the seam-friendly surface and larger boundaries at Stormont. Ten Doeschate said the team had discussed the need to adjust its approach but failed to implement those plans during the matches.
The coach believes the defeat offers valuable lessons ahead of India’s upcoming white-ball tour of England, which begins on July 1. He stressed that the team must be smarter and more flexible in different overseas conditions instead of relying on the aggressive style that has worked on Indian pitches. India will now look to regroup quickly as they prepare for five T20 internationals and three one-day matches against England.
