India Launches IAIRO to Transform AI Strategy into Sovereign Execution

India has officially launched the Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO), marking a shift from strategic planning to sovereign execution in its artificial intelligence journey. Established in New Delhi on January 30, 2026, IAIRO aims to translate AI research and intellectual property into deployable, population-scale systems, reinforcing India’s long-term technological autonomy. The launch aligns with national initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission, MeitY policies, and the Gujarat AI Action Plan.

IAIRO will focus on developing domain-specific AI models, including neurosymbolic and hybrid agent-based frameworks, prioritizing compact and cost-effective solutions over large consumer-oriented models. The organisation seeks to retain world-class AI talent in India, produce sovereign intellectual property, and support evidence-led AI policies for secure and trustworthy deployment. Founding director Dr. Amit Sheth emphasized that IAIRO is designed to build India’s AI future “in India, for India, and governed by Indian institutions.”

Headquartered in GIFT City, Gujarat, IAIRO is structured as a public–private partnership, integrating research, ecosystem collaboration, talent development, and real-world deployment. Its founding team and advisory board include leading academics and industry experts from India and global technology firms such as IBM, Google, DeepMind, OpenAI, and Apple. With this launch, India positions itself not only as a participant in the global AI race but as a sovereign shaper of its AI destiny, paving the way for measurable outcomes and strategic leadership.
