India Finds Nestlé Baby Food Sample Substandard, Takes Legal Action
India’s food safety regulator has found a sample of Nestlé’s infant follow-up formula to be substandard for its biotin content and has initiated legal action against the company. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) said a re-analysis of the sample found it did not meet the prescribed biotin requirements under Indian regulations.
The regulator has also filed separate cases against two Nestlé baby food products, NAN Excella Pro Stage 1 and Lactogen Pro 1, over alleged misleading claims on their labels. FSSAI said three separate adjudication cases have been filed against Nestlé. The regulator has not indicated whether the affected product will be recalled.
Nestlé India said its products are fully compliant with applicable regulations and that it continues to cooperate with authorities. The company also said the statements on the labels were factual, supported by scientific literature and had been approved by an FSSAI expert committee. The action comes amid increased scrutiny of India’s food industry and recalls memories of the 2015 Maggi controversy involving the company.
