India Cracks Down on Fake Mounjaro Pens
Indian regulators have seized more than 260 suspected counterfeit pens of Mounjaro, a popular treatment developed by Eli Lilly and Company. Authorities in Haryana arrested two individuals accused of manufacturing and distributing the fake drugs near New Delhi, uncovering an illegal operation run without a pharmaceutical licence.
Investigators said the accused sourced raw materials, including peptides, from vendors on Alibaba Group and sold the counterfeit pens at discounted rates through IndiaMART. Officials also recovered large quantities of packaging materials and labels designed to mimic genuine products, with the total seized items valued at around ₹7 million.
The case highlights risks in India’s rapidly growing obesity and diabetes drug market, where demand for treatments like Mounjaro is surging. Regulators noted discrepancies in packaging and improper storage conditions, raising concerns about patient safety. Samples have been sent for laboratory testing, while Eli Lilly and Company said it supports the investigation and remains committed to tackling illicit medicines.
