India Clinches First Women’s World Cup Title, PM Modi Leads Nation in Celebrations
India scripted history on Sunday as the women’s cricket team lifted their maiden World Cup trophy, defeating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium. The landmark victory came after near misses in the 2005 and 2017 finals, and was witnessed by 40,000 ecstatic fans. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the achievement, praising the team’s “exceptional teamwork and tenacity,” adding that the win would inspire future generations to “dream big and chase those dreams.” The Indian cricket board announced a reward of ₹510 million for the champions, with newspapers across the country celebrating the triumph as “Herstoric.”
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur called the win a defining moment for women’s cricket in India, emphasizing its potential to transform the sport’s popularity nationwide. “We’ve been playing good cricket for years, but we needed this one big tournament,” she said. “Fans want to see their team win, and today we got the moment we were waiting for.” India’s campaign had earlier looked uncertain after three consecutive defeats, but a dramatic turnaround saw them eliminate seven-time champions Australia in the semi-final before sealing their long-awaited glory.
Batting legend Sachin Tendulkar likened the victory to India’s iconic 1983 men’s World Cup win, calling it “a defining moment in the journey of Indian women’s cricket.” Former captain Mithali Raj, who led India to the 2017 final, said the triumph fulfilled a two-decade-long dream. “Every tear, every sacrifice, every young girl who picked up a bat believing we belong here—it all led to this moment,” she said. The win is being celebrated not just as a sporting achievement but as a watershed in India’s march toward gender equality in sport.
