HC Tells Shilpa Shetty, Raj Kundra to Deposit ₹60 Crore Before Considering Plea to Travel Abroad
The Bombay High Court on Wednesday said it would consider Bollywood actor Shilpa Shetty and her husband Raj Kundra’s plea seeking permission to travel abroad only if they deposit ₹60 crore — the amount mentioned in an alleged cheating case against them. A bench of Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad observed that it could not permit leisure trips when the duo faced charges of cheating and fraud.
The couple’s counsel told the court that only their planned trip to Phuket was for leisure, while the others were professional. The court, however, remarked that the duo had not been arrested only because of their cooperation with the probe. It also asked for proof of invitations or communication for the professional events Shetty was to attend. The matter has been posted for further hearing on October 14.
The case stems from a complaint by businessman Deepak Kothari, who alleged that between 2015 and 2023, he paid ₹60.48 crore to Shetty and Kundra for expanding their now-defunct company, Best Deal TV Pvt Ltd, but the amount was used for personal expenses. A look-out circular issued by the Economic Offences Wing of the Mumbai Police remains active, preventing the couple from leaving India without court permission.
