Google Denies Reports of Major Gmail Security Breach

Google has dismissed reports of a massive Gmail data breach after claims circulated online alleging that millions of email passwords had been leaked. The tech giant clarified that the reports were based on a misunderstanding of old, stolen data resurfacing on the internet rather than a new security incident. “Reports of a ‘Gmail security breach impacting millions of users’ are false. Gmail’s defences are strong, and users remain protected,” Google stated on its official X account, adding that it actively monitors for exposed credentials and assists users in securing their accounts.

The controversy began after cybersecurity expert Troy Hunt, founder of the breach notification platform Have I Been Pwned, revealed that a 3.5-terabyte database containing around 183 million email credentials had surfaced online. The dataset reportedly included information from various past breaches and may contain Gmail accounts, among others. Following media reports highlighting the leak, Hunt advised users to check if their details were compromised by visiting HaveIBeenPwned.com, a platform that allows individuals to verify whether their information has appeared in known data breaches.

While Google maintained that Gmail itself remains secure, the company urged users to adopt stronger account protection measures. It recommended enabling two-step verification, using passkeys instead of traditional passwords, and avoiding password reuse across multiple platforms. Experts also advised users to change their passwords regularly and activate multi-factor authentication to minimize the risk of unauthorized access.
