Flipkart Accelerates Quick Commerce Push Ahead of IPO Plans

Flipkart is rapidly scaling its quick commerce arm “Minutes,” planning to expand its neighbourhood warehouse network to around 1,500 locations in the coming months, up from about 1,000 at present. The move comes as the company prepares for a future Mumbai listing, although no fixed IPO timeline has been announced. Backed by Walmart, Flipkart is strengthening its position in India’s fast-growing $11 billion quick commerce sector, where instant grocery and essentials delivery has become highly competitive.

The expansion strategy focuses heavily on smaller towns and cities, which now account for nearly 70% of Flipkart Minutes’ presence across more than 130 cities. The company claims strong traction in these regions, reporting 42 times higher sales growth in smaller markets and a five-fold increase in overall orders over the past year. According to executives, consumers in these areas tend to build larger order baskets due to value-conscious buying behaviour, while urban markets like Bengaluru are seeing more diversified demand, including premium products like multiple varieties of avocados.

Competition in the segment remains intense, with Blinkit and Swiggy already operating larger networks and higher daily order volumes, as per data from Datum Intelligence. While Flipkart lags in order volume at around 820,000 daily orders compared to its rivals, it leads in average order value at about ₹700. Industry analysts note that while Flipkart’s expansion is aggressive, gaining market share in a convenience-driven segment dominated by entrenched players will remain a key challenge.
