EU on Cusp of Historic Free Trade Deal With India: Ursula von der Leyen

The European Union is close to finalising a free trade agreement with India, though some work still remains to seal the deal, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Tuesday during her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos. Highlighting the EU’s push to diversify its trade partnerships, she described the proposed agreement as one of the most significant deals currently under negotiation.

“There is still work to do. But we are on the cusp of a historic trade agreement,” von der Leyen said, adding that the pact has been described by some as “the mother of all deals.” She noted that the agreement could create a combined market of around 2 billion people and account for nearly one-quarter of global GDP, underscoring its massive economic potential for both sides.

Von der Leyen is expected to visit India early next week, signalling intensified engagement as negotiations enter a decisive phase. The visit is likely to focus on resolving outstanding issues and pushing the talks towards a conclusion, as both the EU and India look to strengthen economic ties amid shifting global trade dynamics.
